Director’s Note
Consider the Diva for a moment. She came to us originally as a female vocalist, rolling into operatic crescendos before an audience of thousands. Grounded and capable, she was a master of her art who demanded respect. When she took that same self-assuredness off stage, into the world at large, she became a Diva.
Where is she now? When we think of a Diva today, we see a woman who demands things her way, without giving us a worthy reason why. If we comply with her wishes, we do it begrudgingly. It seems unnecessary that she take herself that seriously, and so we dismiss her as bossy, conceited, or maybe even a bitch. What assets does she have to merit her self-importance? If you will watch us, we will show you.
On Diva Day, we offer you a consideration of the Diva in all of us. Allow her form to coalesce in your mind. Then, in honor of Earth Day, introduce her to another Diva, The DivaCup – one of many brands of reusable menstrual products which allow us to better control how we treat our bodies as well as the earth. And so, our stories of coming into ourselves as Divas draw us down into our bodies, the blood that cycles through us, and experiences that revisit women again, and again, and again. The Divas include performers Erin Dees, Caitlin Fisher-Draeger, Adrian Gebhart, Caitlin Harper, Cat Menkel-Lawrence, and Alex Ramirez writers Kimberly Fanshier and Emily Gregory, choreographer Alison Bailey stage manager Emily Gregory, and director Heather Morowitz With special thanks to Asasass Why The DivaCup, GladRags, or other alternative menstrual products? If instead of using 12 billion pads and tampons annually piling up in landfills, floating in the ocean, washing up on beaches, leaching bleaches and dioxins, into the earth, and into your body. We considered a product which lasts at least 10 years, saves you over $400 long-term, reduces cramps, and protects your health. We could ask ourselves why we are dependent on pads and tampons at all.
