Period Cravings: The BEST Granola + Cacao Nibs

granolaGranola? A period craving??? Well to be honest, it didn’t start out that way. Homemade granola hit my household as a way to reduce waste. The plan was to kick the boxed cereal habit by making a weekly batch of granola at home. We’re on 6 months now being boxed cereal free, and though we don’t contribute as much to the kids’ school Box Tops fund (which … don’t get me started about having to fund education through the cereal we buy …) we LOVE the new granola norm that’s happening.

Granola turned into a period craving one night when I tore through my kitchen seeking ANYTHING to quell the pesky “eat all the things” urge. Cutting back on waste means the standby period treats aren’t on hand these days. But there was that jar of granola. And I had cacao nibs in my stash of backpacking snacks. Mixed it up in a bowl with some coconut milk and my period cravings purred with satisfaction. Now, it’s a standard go-to, somewhere around Day 2 when my uterus ties on its combat boots and starts stamping around like it owns the place.

I always keep a smattering of granola-esque ingredients on hand, so it’s hardly the same recipe twice. But what I’ve learned is that it comes down to basic ratios: 3 cups oats, 3 3/4 cups other, 1/2 cup oil + sweetener. The ingredients below are what happened to be in my cupboards today. And it turned out delish.


3 cups organic rolled oats
1 cup pepitas (sunflower or other seeds are yum, too)
1 cup unsweetened coconut flakes (not shredded)
1 cup slivered or sliced almonds
3/4 cup dried blueberries (cranberries are my favorite, but my daughter has recently declared them “too chewy”)
1/4 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup pure maple syrup (or honey, but I find syrup easier to work with)
splash of vanilla

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Mix your dry ingredients together in a bowl. Combine your coconut oil (melt if solid) with syrup, and a splash of vanilla if you want. Drizzle the liquid over the dry ingredients. Stir together then spread out over an un-lined, un-oiled baking sheet. Pop in the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Ovens vary, so keep an eye on it the first time. (Burnt granola does not satisfy period cravings, and my kids are total jerks about eating burnt things for breakfast.)

Remove from the oven when it’s achieved that right shade of golden. Grab a bowl. Fill it with granola. Top with cacao nibs and coconut milk. And eat your hippie heart out.
